skating polly - 'pretective boy'

I don't think Polly much likes this lad.

dwarfs of east agouza - 'museum of stranglers (part iii)'

Here's something a little esoteric but nonetheless extremely good.

Just perfect.

mount kimbie - 'tunnel vision'

This was one of the stand-out albums of 2010.

søren juul - 'seventeen'

Another artist I haven't listened to in a long while.

cherry glazerr - 'nurse ratched'

Just bloody brilliant.

a.c. jones & the atomic aces - 'give me your love'

Haven't heard this in so long.

mobb deep - 'an eye for an eye (your beef is mine)'

Gone but not forgotten.

lewis - 'we danced all night'

The least likely sensation of 2014 was this long forgotten album from Canadian crooner Lewis.

zola blood - 'the only thing'

What a tune.

sin fang, sóley and örvar smárason - 'citrus light'

3 of my favourite Icelanders have launched a long-term project going where all 3 of them, Sóley, Sin Fang and Örvar Smárson (from Múm and FM Belfast), write and record a song each month together. They're now 3 months in and this is the latest offering. This track is very Sóley-sounding: folky, ethereal and sparse at times.

A brilliant track from the Icelandic band's debut album.

Well, this is an unexpected pleasure. A brand new DJ Shadow EP.

electric eye - 'turn around, face the sun'

Norwegian psychedelia sounding good.

lucy rose - 'is this called home'

The album was conceived whilst she was touring South America, staying at the homes of fans on the way and I guess this adds to the intimacy. It's a lovely, understated album.

Now this is a cover version and a half. Sinead O'Connor singing Elton John's 'Sacrifice'.

terry - 'take me to the city'

Love, love, love the new album from indie-popsters TERRY (the name is capitalised).

haim - 'kept me crying'

Haim's latest album is strictly pop without pretensions of something deeper and I say good luck to them with that. Once you've taken that fact on board and just go with the album it becomes a very good collection of tunes. There's a very 80s feel to some of the tracks and in others they sound a little like Wilson Phillips which should give you a good idea where they've pitched the album.

06 July 2017

sivu - 'sweet sweet silent'

The condition described in this video sounds (sic) horrendous. God forbid I am ever afflicted.

westbam - 'monkey say, monkey do'

Some brilliant scratching here from a 1988 video of Westbam.

ghostpoet - 'freakshow'

New single from Ghostpoet. Nice to hear his Mark E Smith singing style is still going strong.

barbarossa - 'griptide'

Barbarossa has a new single out on Bandcamp on a pay what you like basis. It's a bloody brilliant tune too.

this is the kit - 'moonshine freeze'

I love the indie/folk crossover. The new album is bloody brilliant.

public service broadcasting - 'they gave me a lamp'

The Public Service Broadcasting new album is a tour de force. Anyone not familiar with PSB, they have concept albums based around old news footage of a specific theme. The last PSB album was about the 60s space race and this one sees them exploring mining in the Welsh valleys. Each track is strong enough to stand on its own and coming in at 11 tracks with no fillers, it represents a hell of an album. There's guest appearances from Tracey Anne Campbell (Camera Obscura), Haiku Salut, James Dean Bradfield (Manics) and a wonderfully sounding Lisa Jen Brown (9Bach). This album will undoubtedly be on a lot of end of year lists. Highly recommended.

waxahatchee - 'sparks fly (acoustic)'

New Waxahatchee album = me happy.
