Sometimes you need to do away with the niceties and just put on a big tune. The kind that bullies its way onto a dancefloor and stays there. This EP has such a track. It's a brand new EP from Swedish techno producer Nihad Tule and although not my normal bag musicwise this really kicks the blues away.

At last Zola Jesus is releasing her album, Conatus and it should finally satisfy those of us that have been a long time waiting and making do with (albeit brilliant) EPs. It's as moody as I'd imagined it would be and her voice has an almost 80s earnestness to it that harks back to Toyah, Siouxsie Sioux, Hazel O'Connor and electronica at its most raw. If you are moved by PlanningToRock, Rainbow Arabia and others of that ilk then you will adore this album. Here's a couple of tracks from the album.

Blue Daisy is the moniker of Kwesi Darko and he has a new album out next week. He's been working very closely with Bristol's Black Acre and the trip-hoppy/dub feel to it cannot be coincidental. It's very atmospheric too and the kind of album that you can really lose yourself in. Here's the first track released from it: Raindrops feat. Anneka.
anger bird - titanium a priori

That uber-talented Canadian, Angerbird has just released a new album, Titanium A Priori, on Bandcamp. I have no idea why but she refuses to take any money for her efforts and she's offered the album completely free as a download here. It's utter madness when you consider that HMV charge something like £12 for a CD of tired old bobbins from Razorlight.
She's kept her signature lo-fi feel from the first album which keeps the intimacy and it has a very definite dream pop slant. There's some really catchy tunes in there that you will be humming for days afterwards. Just check out track 5, Bangers, for example. As with the first album, it's a 14 song affair with a fair few instrumentals. I'm not sure what my favourite is yet. Right now it's Mercenary GCF. Actually, they're all lovely. I'll take the lot.

Founder of Sugar Hill Records and hip-hop pioneer, Sylvia Robinson has died aged 75. No mean artist herself she had a singing career spanning 3 decades including chick flick favourite 'Love Is Strange' in the late 1950s and a proto-disco song 'Pillow Talk' in 1973 that was a huge influence on Donna Summer's 'Love To Love You Baby'.
Inspired by seeing Lovebug Starski perform in a New York club she and her husband Joe set up Sugarhill Records, pulled in Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike and Master Gee, produced Rapper's Delight and history was made. She also co-wrote the Message and White Lines, such was her influence on hip-hop's first major commercial successes.
Here she is, performing Pillow Talk on Soul Train back in the day. What an outfit.

Probably my longest title for a post yet and fully deserving of the (very minor) achievement. I love this tune. There is so much to enjoy with this song, just listen to how deep and complex the production is. Genius at work, no less.
sigur rós - inni

I am very excited about the release of Sigur Ros's live album Inni, out next month. There's lots of information about it here and you can pre-order the album from that link too. As a teaser they've released this wonderful video to promote the album. Are Sigur Rós the coolest band at present? They must run Flaming Lips a very close second.

kirby's dreamland

John Kirby is a singer/songwriter from Hamilton USA. I'm not sure which Hamilton as at least 26 of the 52 states have a Hamilton but I'll take a punt at New York State seeing as he seems to tour a lot around there. He's just released his EP free on Bandcamp as a stream and download. I like his sound. He has an early to mid-90s feel to it but what sets him apart is some truly epic guitar chords at times (think U2's Joshua Tree-type of guitar playing.)
He's described as folk-pop but to be honest I don't hear much folk or Americana, this is straightforward guitar based pop rock. It's never going to set the world alight but his music does have a freshness and honesty that, as long as you don't take it too seriously, will wash pleasantly over you.
