warpaint - 'no way out (redux)'

This is apparently the brand new Warpaint track, the first in a series to be released later this year. It's a corker!

warpaint new album

The hype surrounding the LA 4-piece band gathers apace and already the backlash has begun. In recent weeks I've read a few articles from other bands having pops at girl bands and although not referenced directly, Warpaint are undoubtedly one of the bands targeted for criticism. I'm not convinced that this ire isn't borne at least partly from jealousy of the success but if these bands are getting extra publicity because of the 'novelty' factor of female guitarists/drummers (and is it really so strange to see nowadays?) then rest assured elsewhere there is a struggling female singer/songwriter that has been told not to bother because the market is 'saturated'. I digress.

The eponymous second album was released yesterday and generally it has been warmly received although bearing in mind the points from the first paragraph, it seems a few hipster journalists have said they preferred the early EP. The track 'Love Is To Die' from the album is also featured on this Chris Cunningham film project and makes for interesting viewing. See what you think.

warpaint - 'love is to die'

I'm very excited about going to see Warpaint tonight at my all-time favourite music venue, Brixton Academy. Their first album was a very impressive affair and coincidentally the release date of the new album (January 2014) as well as new tour dates have been confirmed in the last couple of days. I'm really pleased to see Brighton Dome as a venue too.

Here's the first release from their eponymous new album.

warpaint - 'beetles'

If only the Beatles had written a song entitled 'Warpaint' I would have had some wonderful symmetry. I recall reading a few years back that a band named an album after John Cougar Mellencamp after he had given his then new album a title shared by another band, so it does happen occasionally.

This is a great song and I do hope that the all-girl group are planning a new assault on the music industry after their wonderful debut a year or two back.

slap on the old warpaint

Apologies but my laptop is being repaired by those nice people at Apple so my posts are a little infrequent until then. This morning though, I read a great interview with one of the most exciting bands around at the moment, Warpaint. It's posted on the Spinner UK website which is, I think an AOL-owned site. It's a little cheesy with the usual questions being asked but they seem to be in a good place at the moment which is really great to hear. The full interview is here:

They also performed an exclusive recording of 'Bees' which you can watch here:

I intend to do a fuller feature on Warpaint soon so watch this space.

On a completely different note, I've also been listening to the Go! Team's new album - 'Rolling Blackouts'. I can see why my 9 year old likes them so much. They are a lot of fun with some lovely old skool 80s hip hop touches to their pop tunes. Here's one of my favourites from the album - 'Secretary Song'. (It reminds me of one of the Pipettes songs from their first album too.)
